PRP Injection Healing Stages

What to expect after regenerative injection therapy - from early soreness to gradual progress over the weeks and months that follow.

If you are considering PRP injections, one of the biggest questions is usually "What happens after treatment?".
Regenerative injection therapy is not usually an instant-result treatment. Some patients notice soreness early on, while improvement may build gradually as the body responds over time.

Important Before Scheduling

PRP Injection Therapy is not a direct-book appointment. Patients must first be established and evaluated by one of our doctors and treatment must be recommended before the office can schedule an injection appointment.

New patients: Schedule a "New Patient Exam" to discuss whether regenerative injection therapy may be appropriate.

Current patients: Ask the doctor during your visit whether PRP treatment may be recommended for your condition.

The General Healing Stages

The treated area may feel sore, achy, tender, stiff, or irritated. Some patients notice mild swelling or increased awareness of the area. This does not automatically mean something is wrong. It may simply be part of the early response after treatment.

Stage 1

Early Soreness and Inflammation

First few days

As the early irritation calms down, patients may begin noticing better tolerance for movement, less day-to-day soreness, or small improvements in function. Progress is often gradual, not immediate.

Stage 2

Settling Down and Early Repair

Next several weeks

This is when patients may continue evaluating comfort, mobility, activity tolerance, and function. Some patients feel changes sooner, while others need more time before they can judge the response.

Stage 3

Remodeling and Long-Term Respose

Weeks to months

First, the area may feel irritated. Next, the early response begins settling. Then, improvement may continue building over time. This is why regenerative injection therapy should be evaluated over a timeline, not judged by the first day alone.

Recovery Expectations

What You May Feel

  • Soreness or aching in the treated area
  • Mild swelling or tenderness
  • Temporary stiffness
  • A gradual change rather than instant relief
  • Good days and slower days during recovery

What Can Effect the Timeline?

  • The condition being treated
  • Whether the issue is joint, tendon, ligament, or
    soft tissue related
  • How long the problem has been present
  • Severity and prior treatment response
  • Activity level and aftercare compliance
  • Individual healing response

How Long Until You Notice Results?

The honest answer is that it depends. Some patients notice early changes sooner than others. Many patients need several weeks before they can fairly judge their response, and some continue watching for changes over several months.

When Should You Call the Office?

Patients should follow the specific aftercare instructions given by the office. If symptoms feel unusually severe, rapidly worsening, or simply do not seem right, it is better to contact the office than guess. This page should help explain general expectations, but it should not replace individualized medical guidance.

The Goal is Progress, Not Perfection Overnight

One of the most helpful mindset shifts after regenerative injection therapy is understanding that healing is usually progressive. Instead of asking, “Why do I not feel completely better yet?” right away, a better question is often, “Am I moving in the right direction over time?”

Thinking About PRP Injections?

The right first step is an evaluation. PRP injections are not direct-book appointments. The doctor must determine whether either option may be appropriate before an injection appointment can be scheduled.
